Controlling Inflammation Naturally with Essential Oils

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s reaction to infection and injury. It is characterized by redness, swelling, warmth, and pain. Inflammation is an immune system response that will allow the body to contain and fight infection or repair damaged tissue by dilating the blood vessels and allowing vascular permeability to increase the blood supply to an inured or infected tissue. While a certain amount of inflammation can be beneficial in fighting disease and healing injuries, too much inflammation or chronic inflammation can actually be debilitating.

Progressive destruction of the tissue would compromise the survival of the organism. However, chronic inflammation can also lead to a host of diseases, such as hay fever, periodontitis, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and even cancer (e.g.,gallbladder carcinoma). It is for that reason that inflammation is normally closely regulated by the body.

Other Inflammation-induced health concerns:
Asthma, allergies, osteoporosis, gout, lupus, psoriasis, IBS, Stomach disorders, heart attack, Congestive heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, chronic bronchitis
and more.

Essential Oils, Blends & Products Recommended

Since inflammation is the body's response to a host of intrusions from infection to injury, from hay fever to rheumatoid arthritis understanding the root cause is of great importance.

With that understanding the oils and protocols associated with the root cause will be of interest. With this said, there is a broad range of oils recommended for inflammation in general. The list below is taken from a brief review of recommendations made by a contemporary essential oils expert, Dr. David K. Hill. Reviewing some of his writings and lectures these are oils that were most often suggested for inflammation in general:

Oils & Blends:
Most mentioned: Frankincense, Helichrysum, Myrrh, Melaleuca, Deep Blue
Often mentioned: Basil, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Lavender, Peppermint, Wintergreen

Essential oils based products: AromaTouch Technique, Life Long Vitality supplements, which are The AlphaCRS+ and the Microplex VMz for the polphenols and other antioxidants to help relieve oxidative stress associated with inflammation. xEO Mega for omega-3 fatty acids that help balance the inflammatory response.

Experiences and Testimonials of others

Dr. David K. Hill, in his book Nature’s Living Energy: A Personal Guide to Using Essential Oils speaks extensively about inflammation and makes these important points:

Inflammation is the root cause of degenerative disease in the body.

With inflammatory disease the immune system is usually working perfectly against pathogens but is actually overworking and destroying healthy tissue rather than pathogens.

It is our poor diet that stimulates constant inflammation.  Foods and drink high in acid content create inflammation in the body. One fatty acid in particular, omega 6, generally in meats and processed cooking oils is consumed in much larger quantities than we need.

This means that even when we do not need an inflammation response (we haven’t been injured or exposed to toxicity or infection) inflammation occurs anyway due to excessive consumption of omega 6 fatty acids.

We consume too much junk food, red meats, organ meats, processed meats, soda pop and other unhealthy food.  Eat whole, raw, fresh fruits and vegetables. Daily supplementation of core vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber is also of the utmost importance.

Essential oils have some ability to control inflammation. Studies have indicated that essential oils and plant extracts applied topically can reduce inflammation as much as 45%.

I have found that a combination of lemon and myrrh, or oregano and myrrh applied topically can be quite soothing to inflamed joints.

Some essential oils like peppermint, wintergreen, citrus oils, and lavender have analgesic effects, making them beneficial for inflammation and pain.

Essential oils and diet are the two most influential factors for controlling unwanted inflammation. Diet is not a battle to win all at once, but one food at a time.  Eliminate one bad and replace it with one good.  Add daily core supplementation to include antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and probiotics.

Use essential oils to help manage acute symptoms with topical application, and internally for specific application like infection or other stressors in the body.
